Gunner Scott

Artist. Weaver. Activist. Traveler. Reluctant Writer.

Gunner Scott has eaten fire, lead protest marches, hosted open mics, curated artist showcases, and DJ’d lefty dance parties! Now he is actively engaged in creating weaving artistic wall hangings and textiles.

Inspired by nature, human emotions, and the ebb and flow of life, his weavings are organic textured and colorful.

About Gunner

A queer FTM/Transgender activist, he received a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Goddard College, where he completed an oral history project entitled “Boston Area Transgender Community Leaders and the ENDA Crisis.” He has written articles for Boston Phoenix, Bay Windows newspaper, What’s Up magazine, Sojourner Women’s Forum, and “Agitate and Activate” the introduction to Pinned Down by Pronouns, the 2003 Lambda Literary nominee anthology. He is also a co-author on the study and the 2012 article in the American Journal of Public Health entitled “Transgender Health in Massachusetts: Results From a Household Probability Sample of Adults.”

Through Making Waves Coaching & Consulting, he supports artists, activists, creative professionals and entrepreneurs in developing their practices and self confidence in promoting their craft, their brand, and their passion to the world. With a 20 year background in providing mental health, substance abuse, and survivor empowerment counseling, he has supported individuals in making change. Along with his executive level non-profit management experience, he has been creative culture maker producing community arts events.

He has created culture making events and websites. In 2000, he founded Gender Crash Open Mic, which was Boston’s only specifically transgender inclusive ongoing event, which ran until 2009, and also the community driven websites ButchDykeBoy.com (2000-2004) and later GenderCrash.com (2004-2009).

With his involvement with the 2011/2012 Occupy Boston movement, he co-coordinated an art show in November 2011 at the Occupy Boston Dewey Square encampment entitled, Undivided: Dewey Square Pop-up Art Show – Inspired by Occupy Boston/Occupy Wall St. In addition to his participation with Occupy Boston, he was invited to participate at the “Trans-Form The Occupation,” a panel and community forum transgender awareness event held on day 58 of Occupy Wall Street in Liberty Plaza, NYC in 2011.

In addition to his social justice activism, he is also passionate about saving wild lions from extinction and captivity including advocating for lions to be added to the Endangered Species Act and all wild lion trophies from hunts should be banned from entering the United States and all other countries.
